When conversations around artificial intelligence begin, they usually focus on large technology companies, research labs, or urban startups.
But India’s next AI milestone may emerge from a very different place – a village.
The government’s decision to provide free AI training to more than 5.5 lakh Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) through the Common Service Centre (CSC) network represents more than a skilling initiative. It signals a shift in how India is approaching AI adoption: from building technology for a few to building capability for millions. The initiative is part of the broader IndiaAI Mission, which aims to train one million people in advanced digital technologies, with VLEs receiving priority.
For years, India’s digital transformation has relied on these entrepreneurs. They operate Common Service Centres that deliver essential services such as Aadhaar enrolment, banking, insurance, digital payments, telemedicine, and access to government schemes. In many villages, they are the first point of contact for technology.
Now imagine the impact if this same network becomes AI-enabled.
Instead of simply helping citizens access digital services, these entrepreneurs could use AI to assist farmers in understanding weather patterns, help students access personalised learning, support small businesses with marketing content, simplify government paperwork, or guide local entrepreneurs in making better financial decisions.
The opportunity extends far beyond individual productivity.
India has often demonstrated that technology adoption scales fastest when trusted local intermediaries are involved. The success of digital payments, Aadhaar-enabled services, and UPI wasn’t driven solely by technology – it was driven by people who helped communities understand and use these platforms.
AI will likely follow a similar path.
One of the biggest misconceptions about artificial intelligence is that its impact will be measured only by the number of advanced models a country builds. In reality, long-term leadership depends just as much on how widely people can apply those technologies in everyday life.
This is where grassroots AI literacy becomes critical.
Training millions of people to use AI responsibly creates a workforce that doesn’t merely consume technology but adapts it to solve local problems. It encourages innovation in agriculture, education, healthcare, retail, governance, and countless other sectors that form the backbone of India’s economy.
There is another important implication.
Much of the global AI conversation focuses on replacing jobs. India’s approach hints at something different: augmenting people already embedded in their communities. Rather than replacing Village Level Entrepreneurs, AI could make them more effective, enabling them to deliver better services, reach more citizens, and create new income opportunities.
Of course, training alone will not guarantee success. Sustained impact will depend on affordable internet connectivity, access to AI-powered tools in local languages, continuous learning, and practical use cases that solve real problems.
But the direction is significant.
Countries that succeed in the AI era won’t be defined only by the sophistication of their research labs. They will also be measured by how deeply AI reaches classrooms, villages, small businesses, and everyday citizens.
India’s greatest strength has always been its ability to scale technology across a vast and diverse population.
The AI race has entered a new phase – one where specialization, not scale alone, will determine who leads.
